Hitachi, Ltd. announced that on April 22 it will release the " Selectop," an easy-to-use PC/workstation monitor featuring a 13.3-inch thin-film transistor (TFT) liquid-crystal display (LCD) screen with a new, wide-viewing-angle "super" TFT technology.

The Selectop combines the "super" TFT technology developed by Hitachi that offers picture quality on a par with that of a CRT display, with the company's advanced LCD panel fabrication technology. The result is a display that overcomes the small size and narrow viewing angle that have been major drawbacks of conventional TFT LCDs, while at the same time preserving the light weight, compact size and low power consumption of such displays.

1. Wide viewing angle and high display quality

(1) The display has a vertical and horizontal viewing angle of 140 degrees. (Conventional TFT LCDs had a vertical viewing angle of 40 degrees and a horizontal viewing angle of 90 degrees.)

(2) The monitor with low-reflection high-clarity flat screen provides uniform image quality, high contrast and fast response, and a dirt-resistant surface.

2. Large-screen, high resolution display of 16.19 million colors

(1) The 13.3-inch TFT LCD has an effective display area that is almost the same as that of a commercial 15-inch CRT.

(2) Can display 16.19 million colors at XGA resolution (1024-by-768 pixels). This answers users' demand for a larger display area and higher picture quality, and also provides near-true-color capabilities.

3. Instant connectability

(1) The TFT LCD monitor is equipped with a CRT-compatible interface for ready connectability with PCs and workstations.

(2) Multiscan capability provides compatibility with XGA (1024-by-768 pixels), SVGA (800-by-600 pixels) and VGA (640-by-480 pixels) modes.

(3) Windows 95 Plug & Play ready.

4. Light, compact, low power consumption

(1) Takes up half the space of a Hitachi 15-inch CRT display.

(2) Consumes half the power of a Hitachi 15-inch CRT display.

(3) Is half the weight of a Hitachi 15-inch CRT display.
