Hitachi, Ltd. will release on March 7 the DF350 series disk array for open systems applications. With a cache memory of up to 1 GB and an Ultra SCSI server interface, the DF350 is capable of transferring data at 40 MB/s, which is twice as fast as the previous model. The configuring of mainstream business systems using UNIX servers, PC servers, the implementing of data warehouses that use large databases, and the use of video-on-demand (VOD) systems that rely on high-speed data transfer capabilities are examples of open system applications that always need storage that is larger, faster and more reliable.
Hitachi's disk array subsystems have been serving these market needs since 1993. In fiscal 1995 the DF300 series became the market leader in Japan. (Source: Gartner Group (Japan) "The Market for Medium and Large Disk Arrays in Japan", May 1996)
The DF350, the successor to the DF300 series, is available in four model configurations that include desktop, rack and cabinet installations. Up to 1 GB of controller cache memory can be installed (rack or cabinet models), a major increase compared to the 128 MB on previous models. Maximum disk storage capacity is 700 GB. The Ultra SCSI interface is provided in addition to the SCSI-2 interface ,achieves a high-speed data transfer rate, and supported for the Fibre Channel interface will also be made available. Under the fault tolerance implementation, malfunction in a controller causes the system to switch automatically to a standby controller, avoiding system shutdown.
The DF350 series supports RAID level 5, 1, 0.
