Hitachi and Cambridge University Announce Collaboration in Communications Systems ResearchThis collaboration brings together one of the world's largest information systems manufacturers with a major academic force, creating one of the most influential teams of its kind in the world. The purpose of the collaboration is to develop technological solutions in key areas of network software technology, such as copy protection, network security and architecture. Professor Stewart Lee, Director of CCSR, Cambridge University comments, "Cambridge is pleased to be able to expand our involvement with Hitachi by setting up the collaboration in communications systems research. We have built an impressive team of world-class researchers whose work will be much enhanced by the involvement of Hitachi. " Dr. Yutaka Kuwahara, General Manager, R&D, Hitachi Europe Ltd., adds, " We welcome this opportunity to begin the third major collaboration with such a highly respected organisation as CCSR of Cambridge University. Through this alliance, we are confident that we will make a positive contribution to European society by the creation and application of new technologies." This is the third major research project initiated between Hitachi and Cambridge University. The first collaboration started in April 1989 with the Microelectronics Research Centre (MRC) of the Cavendish Laboratory of Cambridge University. It focused on microelectronics and resulted in the demonstration of 'Single Electron Memory' in February 1993 for the first time in the world. The second collaboration in high-performance computing has given rise to a number of new opportunities by using super-parallel computer systems to explore advanced computer simulation for various applications including the atomic structure of materials and the analysis of fluid dynamics.
