Hitachi and NTT Electronics Agree to Joint Development of Low Power Version 32-bit SH-3 RISC Microprocessor Core

- NTT Electronics' advanced technology to be applied to SuperH family to produce system ASICs for portable terminals, communications equipment -

Hitachi, Ltd. (NYSE:HIT) and NTT Electronics Corporation (NEL) have reached agreement relating to jointdevelopment of a low power version SH-3 core of the SuperH(TM) RISC engine family. Under the terms of the agreement, NEL will be applying its low-voltage device technology and other leading-edge technology to the SH-3. Hitachi will provide SH-3 (which uses 0.35 micrometer process technology) design information, and NEL will use 0.25 micrometer technology to make design improvements, and the companies will develop the low power version of the SH-3 core. The combination of Hitachi's SH-3 core and NEL's well-known technology in the area of low-voltage circuitry will be used to provide optimized solutions for portable terminals, communications equipment and other groups of products.

Speaking on the agreement, Mr. Toshimasa Kihara, general manager of Microcomputer & ASIC Business Operation of Hitachi, said, "We are very pleased to be working closely with NEL to develop the low power version of the SH-3 for portable and communication applications. The collaboration with NEL will allow us to further expand the SH family's acceptance in the multimedia market. "

Dr. Nobuaki Ieda, executive director of the LSI business operation of NEL, said, "We are eagerly awaiting the development of the SH-3 embedded gate array. This embedded array will provide a low power ASIC solution for communication systems. In the collaboration with Hitachi, we can develop many kinds of low power SuperH core ASICs under the condition of an established design environment."

Hitachi is actively forming partnerships with the aim of establishing the SuperH as an industry standard in the multimedia market. In July last year, for example, Hitachi licensed the SuperH core to VLSI Technology Inc., of the U. S., and this October continued to expand its SuperH business by signing a SuperH core licensing agreement with Seiko Epson Corporation.

The joint-development agreement with NEL will provide a further strengthening of the SuperH product development system. Joint development in line with the agreement will lower the operating voltage requirements of the SuperH, boost performance, expand the application base, and reinforce the lineup of SuperH products.

NEL will use technology developed by NTT research laboratories to develop, in conjunction with other enterprises, communications and multimedia semiconductor products for NTT and an extensive range of other customers. LSIs for optical communications products and terminals for ISDN and other network systems are one of NEL's strengths, and an area in which the joint development agreement will enable the company to expand its lineup of ASIC products for low-power system terminals.

About the SuperH
The SuperH family of high-performance, low-power RISC microprocessors is extensively used in portable information devices and multimedia products such as car navigation systems and digital cameras. The SH-3 supports the Windows(R) CE operating system released last year by Microsoft Corporation. This support includes memory management functions and a full complement of power management features. Also, the SH-4, featuring 360 MIPS performance at 200 Mhz, provides support for the Windows CE.

The SuperH already has 2,000 design wins and Hitachi continues to expand the range of SuperH microprocessors to meet the diverse needs of customers.
