Hitachi Releases Two 133-MHz High-end SH-3 RISC Microprocessors

- Market introduction of two products designed for portable information-processing and multimedia equipment: the SH7709A, which provides high-performance with low power consumption, and the SH7729, which adds DSP functionality -

Hitachi, Ltd. (NYSE:HIT) today announced the release of two high-end versions of SH-3 RISC microprocessor of the SuperHTM*1 family appropriate for portable information- processing and multimedia equipment. These new products provide high performance (133-MHz operation) with low power consumption. The SH7709A and SH7729 both incorporate a new on-chip debugging function*2 and the SH7729 adds digital signal processor (DSP) functionality that provides high-speed compression and expansion of image data and other functions. Sample shipments will begin in July 1998 in Japan.

Since Hitachi released the 45-MHz SH7702 and the 60-MHz SH7708 in March 1995, the Company has continued to respond to user needs by introducing the 100-MHz SH7708R and SH7718R, and the 80-MHz SH7709 , which provides improved peripheral functionality. These products have been widely adopted in portable information-processing products, in-car navigation systems, digital cameras, and other multimedia products. However, due to the remarkable performance improvements in portable information-processing and multimedia equipment, there is now an increasing need for improved speed and performance in the CPUs used in these products.

The SH7709A and SH7729 of this release include peripheral functions compatible with those of the SH7709, and, in response to these user needs, provide high performance by operating at a 133-MHz clock rate. At the same time, their performance has been improved by increasing the cache size to 16 kB. Additionally, the power supply has been divided into two systems, one for internal use and one for chip I/O. This allows the internal power-supply voltage to be reduced to 1.8 V, providing low power dissipation. Furthermore, since an on-chip debugging function has been added, real-time emulation is now possible even at high operating frequencies by using the E10A PC card emulator as a development tool.

The SH7729 also provides DSP functionality. Although Hitachi has previously provided SuperH models which add DSP functionality to the SH-1 and SH-2 products, the SH 7729 is the first model in the SH-3 line that provides DSP functionality. The provision of DSP functionality allows portable information-processing equipment to respond to need for voice memo capability and high-speed processing of image data. These products additionally include 16 kB of on-chip RAM for storage of the data required for DSP processing such as JPEG and ADPCM. These microprocessor can access both an instruction in cache memory and this internal memory in a single cycle, even when operating at 133 MHz, enabling high-speed processing.

In addition to the SH-3 CPU core, the on-chip functions provided by the SH7709A and SH7729 include an MMU*3, which is indispensable for operating systems that support memory protection and virtual memory, a DMAC*4, an A/D converter, a D/A converter, 32-bit timers, a real- time clock, a serial communications interface (SCI), and direct interfacing circuits for a wide variety of memory types, including synchronous DRAM. These products are provided in a 208-pin LQFP or a 216-pin CSP package that is, except for the power-supply pins, pin compatible with the SH7709. Additionally, these products are software compatible with the SuperH family, and thus allow new systems to be developed quickly by using existing hardware and software assets.

Future developments in the SuperH family will include even faster versions of the SH-3, ASSP products, and low-power SH-4 products. Hitachi is committed to providing a wide range of variations in this product line. Hitachi is also developing the SH-5 as the next generation in this series of high-performance CPUs.

Notes

*1. SuperH: SuperH is a trademark of Hitachi, Ltd.
*2. On-chip debugging function
:(Hitachi - User Debug Interface): This circuit consists of one section of the debugging circuits included in earlier emulators. Including this function on chip enables real-time emulation at the microprocessor's basic operating frequency during system evaluation.
*3. MMU: Memory management unit
*4. DMAC: Direct memory access controller
