Hitachi, Ltd. (NYSE:HIT) today announced the release of the SH7750V, a low-power-
consumption model in the SH-4 (SH7750) series of RISC microprocessors for portable
information devices and multimedia products, featuring a high performance of 230
MIPS/896 MFLOPS*1 together with a low power consumption of 400 mW. Sample
shipments of both types will begin in December 1998 in Japan.
In addition, Hitachi has developed three single-chip peripheral LSIs as SH-4 chip-sets for
use in handheld PCs (H/PCs) running the next version of Windows(R) CE*2: the HD64463
with peripheral functions including a color liquid crystal controller and IrDA*3 controller;
the HD64464 (MQ-100) with a color liquid crystal controller, and graphics accelerator,
together with display memory; and the HD64465 with peripheral functions including a
USB*4 host controller and an IrDA controller. These chip-sets can be used to configure
most next-generation H/PC systems supporting the next version of Windows(R) CE, enabling
high-performance systems to be implemented in a compact form within a short timeframe.
Microsoft's Windows(R) CE operating system, designed for portable information devices and
multimedia products, is attracting great attention in enabling the use of Windows(R) 95 not
only in PCs but also in portable information terminals and embedded products, thereby
offering a drastic improvement in user-friendliness.
An H/PC with Windows(R) CE offers the same performance as a PC in a more compact
package, together with the ability to exchange data with a notebook or desktop PC via
infrared communication or an RS-232C interface, and a long operating period on battery
power.
With its support for Windows(R) CE, good balance between high performance and low power
consumption, and high code efficiency provided by the use of 16-bit fixed-length
instructions, Hitachi's SH-3 RISC processor is used in many H/PCs. To provide
compatibility with the next version of Windows(R) CE, respond to the demand for even
higher performance, lower power consumption, and the higher integration required to
achieve more compact, lighter, and lower-powered portable products, there is a need for
support that takes account not only of the CPU, but of the entire system, including
peripheral functions.
The next generation of H/PCs with Windows(R) CE will feature USB controllers in addition
to the functions of the current generation, together with larger screens. Used in combination
with the SH-4, the HD64463, HD64464, and HD64465 offer an ideal solution for the next
generation of H/PCs with Windows(R) CE, the leading worldwide market in the field.
The SH-4 series achieves high performance through the use of a superscalar*5 system which
allows simultaneous execution of multiple instructions, supports 32-bit floating-point
operations*6, and features greatly improved digital signal processing capability, including
image processing. These features make it the ideal choice for the wide range of full-fledged
multimedia products that can be expected to appear on the market.
The newly developed SH7750V inherits the architecture of Hitachi's SuperH?*7 RISC
microprocessor, which is used in many H/PCs thanks to its high code efficiency resulting
from the use of 16-bit fixed-length instructions, and the good balance it offers between high
performance and low power consumption. The SH7750V is a Windows(R) CE support CPU,
supporting a variety of peripheral devices and providing higher performance and lower
power consumption.
The SH7750V features a 128 MHz operating frequency at 1.5 V, with a 230 MIPS/896
MFLOPS performance and 400 mW power consumption, enabling image processing, voice
recognition, voice synthesis, communication, and other functions to be implemented by
software in portable products.
On-chip peripheral functions include, as before, a 16-kbyte data cache and 8-kbyte
instruction cache, a memory management unit (MMU)-an essential feature when an OS
supporting memory protection and virtual memory is installed-a 32-bit multiplier, 4-
channel direct memory access controller (DMAC), 32-bit timer, realtime clock, serial
communication interface (SCI), SCI with FIFO, and direct interfaces for various kinds of
memory, including PCMCIA cards and synchronous DRAM.
Also, to enable a more compact H/PC to be produced in a short timeframe, peripheral LSIs
have been developed for use in chip-sets with the SH-4 series. The HD64463 and HD64465
feature USB, a keyboard controller interface, and printer interface functions in addition to
the functions of Hitachi's previous HD64461. The HD64464 supports simultaneous dual-
screen display for an LCD and CRT, and includes on-chip display memory.
The HD64464 also has a function for displaying different images simultaneously on two
displays-an LCD and a CRT-that eliminates the need for an external display controller.
The HD64463 and HD64465 incorporate in a single chip peripheral functions previously
provided by means of an ASIC connected externally to the MPU. The HD64464 is
manufactured and sold by Hitachi under license of MQ-100 from MediaQ, Inc. of the USA.
These chip-sets can be used to configure most next-generation H/PC systems supporting the
next version of Windows(R) CE, enabling high-performance systems to be implemented in a
compact form within a short timeframe.
Future plans for the SH-4 series include extension of the lineup with the development of
products designed for the next generation of portable products. In addition, a 1000 MIPS
model-the SH-5-is planned for the SuperH family.
Notes: 1. FLOPS: Floating-point operations per second. An indicator of performance
relating to scientific and technical calculations. A performance of 896 MFLOPS
means the ability to execute 896 million floating-point operations in one second.
2. Windows: Windows is a registered trademark of Microsoft Corporation in the
USA and/or other countries.
3. IrDA (Infrared Data Association): A private standards association established with
the aim of improving interconnectability in infrared data communications for
cordless information exchange.
4. USB (Universal Serial Bus): A personal computer interface standard jointly
developed by seven companies including Intel and Microsoft of the USA.
5. Superscalar system: A method of operating a processor at high speed by executing
multiple instructions simultaneously in a single clock cycle.
6. Floating-point functions: A notation that enables numeric values covering a wide
dynamic range to be expressed with a high degree of precision. Recently,
floating-point functions have become necessary in such areas as coordinate
calculation in graphics processing and equipment control requiring high precision.
7. SuperH: SuperH is a trademark of Hitachi, Ltd.
