Hitachi, Ltd. (NYSE:HIT) today announced the release of four products in a series of low-
on-resistance power MOS FETs employing a 1.1 mm-thick small, thin, surface-mount
TSOP-6 package, for use in portable phone power switches, lithium-ion battery protection
circuits, and DC/DC converter power supplies for MD players, VCR cameras, and similar
products. Sample shipments will begin in November 1998 in Japan.
This series makes possible an approximately 57% reduction in board mounting area
compared with Hitachi's previous TSSOP-8 thin package, and achieves the industry's lowest
on-resistance for power MOS FETs using a TSOP-6 package. The four new products are
the N-channel HAT2053M and HAT2054M, and the P-channel HAT1043M and
HAT1044M, all with 2.5 V or 4.5 V low-voltage drive capability.
With the rapid rise in popularity of portable information devices such as portable phones,
PHS phones, and notebook PCs, all using batteries as their main power source, there has
been a parallel increase in the use of lithium-ion batteries in the quest for smaller, lighter
products offering longer operating periods. These portable information devices employ
small-package, low-on-resistance power MOS FETs as power supply power management
switches and lithium-ion battery pack charge/discharge protection switches.
With the accelerating trend toward smaller, slimmer, and lighter portable phones, there is a
strong demand for power MOS FETs housed in smaller, thinner packages. In response to
this need, Hitachi currently has 1.1 mm-thick TSSOP-8 power MOS FETs in mass
production, but in applications such as portable phones there is a demand for small, 1.1 mm-
thick surface-mount packages with an even smaller mounting area.
Hitachi has now developed four products in a power MOS FET series that employs a 1.1
mm-thick small surface-mount package with an approximately 57% smaller mounting area
than the TSSOP-8, and features a low on-resistance and low-voltage drive.
This series employs Hitachi's latest 6th-generation fine 0.8 micron meter process using a trench
structure, and, through internal chip optimization and minimization of the package
resistance, achieves small size and low on-resistance by TSOP-6 standards. The on-
resistance of the new N-channel HAT2054M, at 40meter ohm, is only approximately just 1/5 that
of Hitachi's previous 2SK2980, which is housed in a 1.3 mm-thick MPAK (Hitachi package
code name) package with virtually the almost same area as the TSOP-6. This results in
lower power consumption loss when switching on, making it possible to produce a small,
highly efficient set with a long battery life.
The HAT2053M and HAT2054M are N-channel models. The HAT2053M is a 2.5V-drive
with a 20 V drain-source withstand voltage and 28meter ohm on-resistance, suitable for use as a
switch for lithium-ion battery charge-discharge protection circuits. The HAT2054M is a 4.5
V-drive element with a 30 V drain-source withstand voltage and 26meter ohm on-resistance,
offering the industry's lowest on-resistance for a TSOP-6 product, and being suitable for
applications such as DC/DC converter power supplies for MD players, VCR cameras,
notebook PCs and other portable devices, and small motor drives for cameras and HDDs,
etc. The HAT1043M and HAT1044M are P-channel models, suitable for applications such
as portable phone power switches and notebook PC power management switches.
The HAT1043M is a 2.5 V-drive with a -20 V drain-source withstand voltage and 55meter ohm
on-resistance. The HAT1044M is a 4.5 V-drive with a -30 V drain-source withstand
voltage and 50meter ohm on-resistance. The standard delivery form is embossed-taping
packaging, suitable for automated mounting.
Future plans include expansion into 60 V and 100 V withstand-voltage series, and the
development of high-performance models offering an even lower on-resistance through the
use of a new 7th-generation process (ultrafine trench-structure process) designed with this
goal in mind.
