Hitachi Releases RISC Microcomputer SH-4 Series SH7751, Featuring Industry's Top-Level Performance of 1,000 MIPS/W and On-Chip PCI Bus Controller

- For small, high-performance, low-power-consumption systems offering easy connection to personal computer peripheral devices -

Hitachi, Ltd. (TSE: 6501) today announced, as an addition to the top-end SH-4 Series in the
SuperH(TM) family*1 of RISC microcomputers, the SH7751 RISC processor featuring the
industry's top-level performance of 1,000 MIPS/W and an on-chip controller for a PCI bus*2, a
high-performance standard bus that provides easy connection to personal computer peripheral
devices. Sample shipments will begin in August 1999 in Japan.

Personal computer functions and processing power have been increasing at a remarkable rate,
due to such factors as higher CPU speeds and larger memory and hard disk capacities, and are
now capable of handling large amounts of multimedia data, including graphics, image, video,
and speech data. With the resulting drastic increase in the amount of data transferred between
the personal computer and various peripheral devices, and the consequent demand for higher
bus speeds, the PCI bus has become standardized as a high-performance standard bus.

PCI bus is now used as a standard high-speed data transfer bus for personal computer
peripherals, providing the interface to graphics controllers, hard disks, and similar devices.

The PCI bus is also drawing attention as a standard bus in the embedded system field, by
economy and reliability, and is used in a wide range of products.

Hitachi's SH-4 Series of RISC microcomputers, using a superscalar method which allows
simultaneous execution of a number of instructions, and offering a maximum performance of
360 MIPS with function of floating-point operations, offer a major improvement in image
processing and similar digital signal processing performance. Known for their low power
consumption and their excellent code efficiency resulting from the use of 16-bit fixed-length
instructions, SH-4 Series microcomputers are used in such devices as handheld PCs installed
with Windows(TM) CE*3.

However, with the advent of the multimedia age, portable information devices also require
high-speed operation on a par with personal computers, plus support that takes account of the
entire system, including Ethernet, IEEE1394, and similar peripheral interfaces. With this in
mind, Hitachi has developed the SH7751 as an SH-4 Series microcomputer with an on-chip PCI
bus controller that allows easy connection to personal computer peripheral devices.

The SH7751 has an on-chip PCI bus controller conforming to the PCI Rev. 2.1 standard,
allowing direct connection to an LSI with on-chip PCI interface operating at 66 MHz or
33 MHz. This means to eliminate externally connected PCI bus bridge, and, with a DMAC,
timers, serial communication functions, and other peripheral functions necessary for
multimedia and OA devices included on-chip, enables system costs to be greatly reduced.
The SH7751 features a 1. 5 V operating voltage and 133 MHz operating frequency, and
achieves 240 MIPS performance with a power consumption of 240 mW. This translates to the
industry's highest-level performance/unit power figure of 1,000 MIPS/W, an approximately
twofold improvement over Hitachi's current SH7750V. Use of the SH7751 will facilitate the
creation of compact, high-performance, low-power-consumption systems with an SH-4 Series
core in such fields as network devices, handheld PCs, and amusement machines.

Future additions to the SH-4 Series lineup will include products designed for use in next-
generation portable devices. In the SuperH family, plans for the SH-5 Series, with a target
performance of 1,000 MIPS, are in the pipeline.
