Hitachi Offers New Entry UNIX Servers Based on Strategic Partnership with IBM |
TOKYO, JAPAN, June 26, 2002 -- Hitachi (NYSE: HIT / TSE: 6501) today announced that it would enhance the product line of Enterprise Server EP8000 Series with the newly developed entry model Enterprise Server EP8000 630 that includes the rack-mount model 6C4 and the tower model 6E4. EP8000 630 that utilizes 1 to 4 way POWER4 processors will be on sale from June 28, 2002. EP8000 630 is the first server product, developed by Hitachi, which Hitachi will manufacture under the strategic alliance agreement with IBM announced on March 13, 2001. Under the agreement, Hitachi and IBM cooperatively develop and manufacture selected servers, semiconductors, and related components in order to provide products and services to meet the customer needs timely. Hitachi offers the entire EP8000 Series as Hitachi's preferred UNIX systems. EP8000 630 achieves the highly sustained performance by integrating the POWER4 processor with high-speed, large-capacity cache chip based on DRAM merged logic technology developed by Hitachi. This technology set has also been applied to the high-end model EP8000 690 announced on October 4 last year. The inclusion of Hitachi's world-leading high-density packaging technology is one of the factors that make EP8000 630 to be more compact and provide customers with better price-performance than ever. EP8000 630 model 6C4 is a 4U rack-mount model and maximum nine model 6C4s can be installed in a 19-inch standard rack. In addition, EP8000 630 achieves higher reliability, availability and serviceability (RAS) that are sufficient for customers to use EP8000 630 for their mission-critical systems in the broadband age. Hitachi materialized those RAS capabilities based on its high-reliability design technology that Hitachi has been developing through its mainframe development for years, redundant power supplies and cooling fans, hot-swappable DASDs and expanded PCI slots. Hitachi and IBM cooperated on the design and manufacture of EP8000 630. Hitachi now provides IBM with this platform for its sales to customers worldwide. This strategic relationship, which was initiated to provide customers with the benefits of the manufacturing and development capabilities of the two companies, is designed to reduce expenses, improve time to market and broaden the range of products to be offered to customers. This product is the global-class mission-critical server based on the technologies that have been developed jointly by Hitachi and IBM. Thanks to the integration of both companies' technologies, this new set of offerings can be positioned as a core product of Hitachi's mission-critical IT solutions. The EP8000 630 offering is one of the successful results of the strategic alliance of Hitachi and IBM, said Isao Ono, Senior Vice President and Director, President & Chief Executive Officer, Information & Telecommunication Systems Group, Hitachi, Ltd. We are pleased with the alliance between IBM and Hitachi, the cooperation to bring the EP8000 630 to the marketplace, and that the entire EP8000 Series is Hitachi's preferred family of UNIX offerings, said William Zeitler, Senior Vice Present and Group Executive, IBM Server Group.
