Tokyo, October 15, 2014 --- Hitachi, Ltd. (TSE:6501, "Hitachi") today announced that Dr. Hiromichi Fujisawa, Corporate Chief Scientist in Hitachi's R&D Group, received the Prime Minister's Award at the FY2014 Industrial Standardization Awards hosted by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI).
Dr. Fujisawa received this award in recognition of his outstanding contributions to international standardization over many years. In 2009, Dr. Fujisawa became the first Japanese ever to be appointed Vice President of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) as well as Chairman of the Conformity Assessment Board (CAB). He was reappointed for a second term as the same positions in 2011 based on his outstanding leadership in successfully acting as a driving force behind the IEC's international standardization activities. In Japan, he has been a member of the Conformity Assessment Board on the Japanese Industrial Standards Committee (JISC), and has energetically supported and driven the activities of METI and the IEC Activities Promotion Committee (IEC-APC). He has made dramatic contributions to the growth of international standardization activities in Japan, and to improving the standing of the Japanese industrial world. In recent years, he has contributed greatly to international standardization in the wind power generation business at Hitachi and throughout Japan. For example, he proposed the startup of a conformity assessment system for wind powered turbines, and in 2011, he established a Wind Turbine Certification Advisory Committee.
The Industrial Standardization Awards recognize individuals who have demonstrated outstanding achievements in standardization activities targeting industrial products. The Prime Minister's Award in particular is presented each year to one person with especially remarkable achievements in the creation of international industrial standards originating in Japan, including persons who have held important positions in organizations that stipulate international industrial standards, such as the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the IEC.
Dr. Fujisawa made the following comments upon receiving the Prime Minister's Award:
"It is a great honor to have received the Prime Minister's Award at the FY2014 Industrial Standardization Awards. With the kind support of many people in Japan, I was selected as IEC Vice President and Chairman of the Conformity Assessment Board, and I was appointed to that position in 2009. During the period of six years, I was extremely fortunate to have been able to start up a new IEC System for certifications in renewable energy testing (IEC System for Certification to Standards Relating to Equipment for Use in Renewable Energy Applications: IECRE), the fourth system of its kind, and the first to be started up by the IEC in 17 years. In the future, I will continue to devote all of my efforts to enhancing quality control and further strengthening standardization activities, in keeping with the government's industrial standardization policies."
