Tokyo, February 29, 2016 --- Keio University and Hitachi, Ltd. (TSE: 6501, "Hitachi") today announced that they have agreed to conduct joint research to contribute to the realization of a "Super Smart Society"* which will be based on cyber security and the Internet of Things (IoT). Keio University and Hitachi will jointly address issues such as technology development for security operation management and the safety of personal information against increasingly sophisticated and large-scale cyber attacks.
Keio University emphasizes the importance of research education as a priority across its laboratories in its undergraduate and graduate schools, and on its campuses. Keio University established the Cybersecurity Research Center within the Keio Advanced Research Centers (KARC) to take an interdisciplinary approach to addressing cyber security which represents the most critical issue facing information society, not just in Japan but worldwide.
Keio University has been contributing to advancements in Internet and IoT technology for over 25 years. In the "Super Smart Society" which will be based on cyber security, IoT, big data and artificial intelligence (AI), innovations will emerge that bring together a broad range of fields. In order to realize such a society, it will be necessary to establish the most advanced security technology through sophisticated analytics and evaluation.
Further, by preparing an organization to undertake this theme within KARC - which was established to provide a research site to facilitate interdisciplinary research between the various schools - the Faculties of Science and Technology, Policy Management, Environment and Information Studies, and the Graduate Schools of Media and Governance and Media Design will take the lead in integrating and further developing current research. At the same time, the Center will work towards resolving cyber security issues which will affect an increasingly large number of areas such as health, medical care, cities, transportation, architecture, environment and agriculture, as well as security education and policy proposals.
Hitachi on the other hand, is delivering solutions to challenges faced by regions and customers worldwide through its Social Innovation Business which brings together Hitachi's vast experience and expertise in infrastructure technology and IT technology. In the security field, Hitachi has been conducting research in technology areas to protect systems and networks through the rapid detection/analysis of malware, new authentication technology using biometric information, and pursuing practical application through activities such as international standardization. Many of these technologies are being implemented in mission critical systems in societal infrastructure such as electronic government. The Hitachi Incident Response Team (HIRT) was established to support Hitachi's cyber security response activities. HIRT provides support in the prevention of cyber security incidents and prompt post-event response for the stable operation of customer and Hitachi's internal systems. HIRT participated in the international community of incident response teams to computer security incidents as the first member from Japan. Hitachi has been contributing to raising security within Japan with these efforts.
Security needs will become even more sophisticated and complex in realizing a "Super Smart Society" which involves greater interconnection of a wide diversity of systems. To address this challenge, it is necessary to conduct research from not only a technology viewpoint but also societal viewpoints as well as regulatory frameworks. Keio University and Hitachi have decided to bring together their respective achievements and strengths towards achieving the world's highest standard of security that will be required in this new age where cyber attacks pose a high impact threat and security technology will become a critical factor supporting society. Further, through this collaboration, Keio University and Hitachi believe that they can contribute to the operational environment through areas such as security education and policy proposals for regulatory frameworks, and intend to strengthen collaboration in these areas.
