UK Students' Opportunity in Japan

London, May 31, 2016 - This summer, Hitachi-GE Nuclear Energy, Ltd. (Hitachi-GE) will be employing five British students, who will work alongside teams in Hitachi city, Japan, during a three month internship.

For the second year running, UK students will experience working in Japan as part of the nuclear development project, visiting existing nuclear sites and experiencing the Japanese culture.

Hitachi-GE is the reactor technology provider for Horizon Nuclear Power, deploying UK Advanced Boiling Water Reactors (UK ABWR) at Wylfa Newydd in Anglesey, North Wales and at Oldbury-on-Severn, South Gloucestershire.

The students were selected from universities in Bangor (North Wales), Cambridge, Bristol, Birmingham, Imperial College London and Manchester, who have all collaborated with Hitachi-GE previously.

Ilan Davies, a third year electronic engineering student from Bangor University who was offered an internship said, "I'm both excited and nervous about living in Japan for three months. I'm hoping to achieve as much as I can whilst out there and grab all opportunities with both hands. I applied for the internship to expand my knowledge and experience within the nuclear industry. When I return to the UK, I will have an additional year in university to complete and will hopefully graduate from my course with a Masters in Electronic Engineering."

Hidetoshi Takehara, President of Hitachi-GE said:

"Collaboration with UK universities is essential in developing new nuclear build and regular ABWR seminars have been held at these universities to enhance UK understanding of the technology. Equally, a joint research programme has been developed, looking at waste management, water chemistry and monitoring systems."

Notes to editors:

  • Wylfa Newydd is being developed by Horizon Nuclear Power a 100% subsidiary of Hitachi Ltd. Horizon Nuclear Power - supported by a Tier-1 team (Menter Newydd) and their future contractors.
  • The Wylfa Newydd project represents a multi-billion pound investment in UK infrastructure and will create tens of thousands of British jobs. Once complete, the power station will provide enough clean, secure and affordable energy for some 5 million British homes.
  • Two UK ABWRs will be developed on site - the most advanced operational nuclear plant anywhere in the world - generating around 2.7GW of energy between them. This will provide enough stable, secure, low-carbon energy for some 5 million British homes. The ABWR has previously been constructed on 4 occasions in Japan, with each unit delivered on-schedule and on-budget.
