Tokyo, June 12, 2024 – Hitachi, Ltd. (TSE:6501, hereafter Hitachi) and Hitachi Building Systems Co., Ltd. (hereafter Hitachi Building Systems) today announced that they have received an order for 173 elevators and escalators for Torch Tower, the highest building in Japan with a height of approximately 390 m above ground level, located in the TOKYO TORCH district in front of Tokyo Station's Nihombashi Exit.

Hitachi and Hitachi Building Systems will also provide FIBEE destination floor reservation system to streamline elevator allocation, and FI-700 elevator management system that ensure efficient elevator operations. They will also provide a function enabling robots to use elevators. By combining elevators and escalators with digital solutions, they will contribute to comfortable moving and efficient building operations.

The order is the largest-ever one for elevators and escalators for the Hitachi Group to receive in Japan. The two escalators connecting the 62nd floor with the rooftop observation deck are Japan's highest-located* outdoor escalators.

Investigated by Hitachi as of May 2024. The escalators will be installed in a space between approx. 368 m (bottom) and approx. 376 m (top) above ground level.

Outline of TOKYO TORCH District and Torch Tower

TOKYO TORCH district represents a large-scale mixed-use redevelopment project covering an area of 31,000 m2, the largest site around the Tokyo Station. As the fourth project in the Chain Urban Renaissance Project in Otemachi, the project is underway to develop four buildings, A to D, while maintain functions of the city's critical infrastructure, such as sewage pumping station and electricity substation in the district. Construction of Tokiwabashi Tower, Building A, and Zenigamecho Building, Building D which belongs to the sewer station, was completed in June 2021 and March 2022, respectively. Buildings B and C, namely Torch Tower and the substation building, and TOKYO TORCH Park, a large 7,000 m2 plaza in the center of the district, are scheduled to be completed in 2028.

Torch Tower, approximately 390 m above ground level, is a large-scale mixed-use building and is the highest building in Japan. It will be equipped with a high-rise office of around 6,700 m2 on the standard floors, a large-scale commercial facility, an observation deck, a residence, an ultra-luxury hotel and a 2,000-seat hall.

Outline and Characteristics of the Elevators and Escalators Ordered

For Torch Tower, Hitachi and Hitachi Building Systems will deliver 173 elevators and escalators consisting of 117 elevators including double-deck elevators with a rated speed of 300 m/min and a loading capacity of 2,300 kg (35 passengers) per deck and an ultra-high-speed elevator with a rated speed of 480 m/min and 56 escalators including the highest-located outdoor escalators in Japan*.

They will also provide systems to streamline elevator allocation, including FIBEE and FI-700. The former reserves an optimal elevator by registering a destination floor with a registration device installed in the elevator hall and displays the number of that elevator on the liquid crystal display of the device, whereas the latter is an elevator management system with human flow prediction and efficiently allocates multiple elevators with the use of AI. In addition, we will offer functions to enable robots to use the elevators and will contribute to efficient building operations using robots.
