In the field of image processing, contrast correction is one technique for correcting brightness and color. It corrects the difference between bright and dark places (i.e., contrast) in an image.
If the contrast of an image is increased, the image becomes clearer (sharper), and if it is increased too much, the tone (smoothness) of the image degrades. On the contrary, if the contrast of an image is decreased, the image becomes "smoother" as the tone across the image evens out, and if it is decreased too much, the image becomes blurred.
