Industrial TRON (The Real-Time operating system Nucleus)
ITRON is one of the real-time operating systems for embedded systems. The specifications were established in 1987 by the TRON Project led by Ken Sakamura, a computer scientist. In 1989, specifications of µITRON were also publicized for smaller systems, which promoted application in a wide range of equipment including telecommunication and office automation devices as well as audiovisual and home electronics products.
According to the survey* by the T-Engine Forum, which is currently engaged in establishing and maintaining the ITRON specifications, ITRON has occupied the largest share each year since 1999 as the OS for embedded systems in Japan, becoming the de facto standard.
