A backdoor in a computer system is a method of bypassing normal authentication to gain access to the system while attempting to remain hidden from the legitimate users of the system. Gaining access through a backdoor not only allows the intruder to steal or tamper with the data on that particular machine, it also gives the intruder control over the machine to use as a springboard to send spam or attack other computers.
